PHP, Jobs, cost of living
Ok so your at ZendCon and lets face it a majority of the people that go can either afford it because they have decent jobs or they have a cool job that pays for them to go.
Whats the point? It means that maybe ZendCon is not the best place in the world to try and hire unless you have something real to offer.
So you got companies like Yahoo, PriceGrabber, IBM and others trying to hire and at some points almost begging for people to apply they are sure to have something to offer right? Move to the silicon valley and if you are a good programmer you can make $65-90K a year easy so it makes sense doesn't it?
No it doesn't and here is why! Cost Of Living!!!!! Want an apartment $1,000 a month, Like wasting hours of time and gallons of gas waiting in traffic you got it! Want to buy a house? You are lucky to get a trailer in the ghetto for under $500k.
The company I work for on the other hand might start you out at $40-60k but you can rent a studio for under $500 or get 1000 sqft for under $700. Want a house, 126 houses available right now under $250k 87 of those are under $150k, and even a few nice new condos for under $75k
No matter where you live in town it will take you less then 10 minutes to get to work, crime rate lower then national average, great schools and you can't here gun shots every night.
Anyway so whats the point? We are currently hiring a system administrator and always looking for programmers that might be interested in a move, if getting out of the valley sounds right give me a holler!
If you are a recruiter, only a stupid person would never leave the door open for discussion but please don't call me up asking me to move to the valley and think throwing in a $2,000 in moving expenses is going to change my mind.

Silicon Valley Double Dare (startup opportunity)
Hey, I'm a recruiter working internally at a start-up in the silicon valley. We offer a great work environment, a great product, and a great compensation package. Is that really too good to be true? If you're any good at PHP or anything of the like, I dare you to check it out for yourself and send me an email... I double-dare you!!!

I agree with you. if you have family, moving to silicon valley won't be a wise decision. but for a single geek, s/he will think more about how cool and fun it is to work in a big company there ...
So very true...
This post really can't express enough the importance of balancing cost of living with income. I'm lucky enough to work in Houston where salaries are high and cost is low but I've been offered jobs all over the country that would effectively cut my salary by one half. New York, San Jose, The bay area in general.. the market on the coasts is hot right now, but I don't see many of those jobs being filled.
Finding a job in a low cost area or somewhere you can work remotely is favorable to working for one of the big wigs on the coast. Always always always remember to factor in your costs with the salary to determine if it's an upward move. I've seen several friends move out to Cali for work only to be down and out barely scraping by making $15k-25k more than I do.
grammar!!
"you are" or "you're", not "your" going mad!!
very interesting article though, although i live in australia, so it's slightly different, but the jist is the same
